How we hear
- Sound waves travel into the ear canal until they reach the eardrum.
- Your eardrum vibrates with the incoming sound and passes the sound vibrations through to the middle ear bones.
- The middle ear bones amplify the sound vibrations and send them to your inner ear, or cochlea. The sound vibrations activate the tiny hair cells in the inner ear. These hair cells change the vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to the brain through the auditory nerve.
- Your auditory nerve carries these electrical signals to the brain. This tells the brain you are hearing sound and translates it into a sound you can understand.
Degrees of hearing loss

- Mild Hearing Loss
A person with a mild hearing loss may hear some speech sounds but soft sounds are hard to hear.
- Moderate Hearing Loss
A person with a moderate hearing loss may hear almost no speech when another person is talking at a normal level.
- Severe Hearing Loss
A person with severe hearing loss will hear no speech when a person is talking at a normal level and only some loud sounds. - Profound Hearing Loss
A person with a profound hearing loss will not hear any speech and only very loud sounds.
