Are Hearing Aids by Mail Legal?

We get the following question from customers a lot: Are hearing aids by mail legal? Well, as of 2017, hearing aids are easier to obtain across the nation. The FDA has proposed new rules around hearing aids by mail – here’s what they have to say about hearing aids by mail.

Freedom of Choice

The biggest difference for people with mild to moderate hearing loss is that they are no longer a required to provide a medical waiver to get a hearing aid. This is significant for a few reasons. First, many people suffer mild to moderate hearing loss, but it typically takes a few years before they do something about it. The idea of seeking help is an impediment in itself, and the cost of a doctor’s visit makes it even less appealing to correct hearing.

This legislation also gives consumers better choices. For a long-time hearing aid user, another visit to an audiologist probably won’t offer new information. And, instead of being stuck with the devices offered by the audiologist, there’s now a much bigger marketplace. If you’re jumping into the world of hearing health for the first time, you have lots of new options available.

And finally, cost is always a factor. Considering that insurance doesn’t normally cover hearing aids, less expensive devices are practical. This new law allows many more people the opportunity to get hearing help. The National Academies of Sciences issued a report on how access to hearing aids could improve the “significant public health concern” that is hearing loss.

Less Red Tape

For the hearing aid industry, the new hearing aid act is a breath of fresh air. Manufacturers can now spend time on innovation and can develop more useful devices. Currently, there are more hearing aid businesses than ever, and the number is growing. With a larger industry, innovation naturally follows. And, since the new FDA requirements remove the need for a medical waiver, it’s easier than ever for people to address a significant health issue and improve their quality of life.
